Writing Product Descriptions That Sell the Story, Not Just the Item
Jul 28, 2026
The dealers who actually sell well online do something different. They tell you why the piece matters. Who might have owned it. What kind of room it sat in, and what it felt like the day they found it tucked away in a barn or an old estate. That's what makes someone stop scrolling instead of clicking past.
Here's the thing about why people buy antiques at all — it's rarely about function. You can pick up a perfectly good chest of drawers on the high street for a fraction of the price. What people are actually paying for is the character, the history, the feeling that they're bringing something with a past into their home. Skip that in your description and you're basically selling the wrong product.
You don't need to make anything up, either. The real details are usually already there; you just have to notice them and give them a bit of space. A worn armrest isn't a defect — it's evidence of decades of genuine use. A repaired leg means the piece survived long enough to be worth fixing. Original brass fittings, a maker's mark, or an uneven patina — buyers aren't put off by these; they're often what convinces them it's genuine.
A good approach is to write in two parts. Open with a line or two that sets the scene — where the piece might have lived and the era it brings to mind. Then get into the practical details: materials, period, condition, and dimensions. People still need those facts before they'll buy, but by that point you've already given them a reason to care.
None of that lands if the site around it looks like every other antiques page online, though. That's really where good antiques website design earns its keep — with a clean layout, proper photography, and nothing fighting for attention. The same goes if your stock is more 1960s teak than 18th-century oak; solid vintage website design is often what separates a well-told story from one that just gets lost in the scroll.
